The Toffee & Silk Danish Vase
✨ This vase carries the weight of a dynasty that treated clay like royal silk.
✨ The glaze is a spectacular cascade of rich, dark toffee and deep ochre. It looks as though it was poured over the vase like thick honey, freezing in time just before it reached the bottom.
✨ The A&S mark on the base is like a secret handshake from a hundred years ago—a hand-stamped signature of quality from a kiln that was just beginning to change the world of ceramics.
✨ A Century of History (1916–1931) ✨
✨ This vase was born on the rocky, wind-swept island of Bornholm, Denmark, during a golden age of artistic discovery.
✨ The vase was crafted between 1916 and 1931. This makes it a rare survivor of the early "Art Deco" transition in Denmark.
✨ During this time, the factory was led by Daniel Folkmann Andersen. He was obsessed with "Flow Glazes" (the drip glaze you see here). He wanted the kiln to do the painting, letting the heat and gravity create those spectacular vertical streaks.
✨ Model 556 was one of the early "Modernist" shapes. It stripped away the fussy Victorian decorations of the past to focus on bold lines and the natural beauty of the minerals in the glaze.
✨To think this heavy, architectural piece survived the boat trip from the Baltic Sea to Australia nearly a century ago is truly magnificent. It is a piece of Danish earth that has seen the world! 🌍✈️
✨ The Danish Dynasty ✨
✨ Founded in 1890 by Michael Andersen, this workshop was on the Danish island of Bornholm. It became a family "jewel," with Michael’s sons joining the fray to create some of the most architectural and beloved pottery in Europe.
✨ The Island Spirit ✨
Because Bornholm is an island, the potters often drew inspiration from the sea and the sun. This vase, with its jewelled ochre tones, feels like a tribute to a summer sunset over the Baltic Sea.
