Emerald City Art Deco Powder Jar ✨
✨ Emerald City Art Deco Powder Jar ✨
✨ Once upon a time, during the glamour-soaked years of the Art Deco era, everyday objects were designed not just for use, but for delight. Powder jars like this one transformed simple daily rituals into moments of beauty, catching the light and adding a sense of magic to a dressing table or vanity.
✨ This luminous powder jar dates to the 1930s and is made from satin-finished uranium glass. Its distinctive mint-green hue is soft, ethereal, and slightly matte in appearance. This satin effect is achieved through acid-etching the surface of uranium-infused glass, creating that velvety glow rather than a naturally polished finish.
✨ The true magic reveals itself under a UV (black) light. The small amount of uranium oxide within the glass causes it to fluoresce in an intense, unmistakable neon green — a dazzling transformation that feels like holding captured fairy light.
✨ A Jar of Art Deco Elegance ✨
✨ The lid is domed and crowned with a pointed finial, often referred to as a spire or pinnacle — a little glass flourish that completes the silhouette beautifully.
✨ The body forms a rounded bowl, gently lifted by a subtly molded foot that adds balance and grace to the design.
✨ Originally created as a powder jar, this piece now makes a beautiful trinket box, perfectly sized to hold jewellery or other precious little keepsakes. It is attributed to Bagley and was made in England, a wonderful example of English Art Deco glass craftsmanship.
✨ Why it’s special ✨
This treasure is one of those rare pieces that feels both glamorous and whimsical. By day, it glows softly in shades of green; under UV light, it comes alive with electric brilliance. It’s decorative, functional, and irresistibly enchanting — a true conversation piece with timeless appeal.
✨ Condition and Character ✨
This piece is in beautiful vintage condition. There are a few tiny flea bites on the underside of the lid and some very fine surface scratches consistent with age and gentle use. These marks are extremely small, were too subtle to photograph, and do not detract from the overall presentation. The jar displays wonderfully and remains a striking example of its kind.
🧚♀️ A Little Note from the Antique Fairy
As with all vintage darlings, this piece has lived a life or two and may have a tiny surface scratch here or there as part of its story. I do my very best to capture any little whispers of wear in photos and notes. If you have any questions or just want to chat about this treasure, feel free to reach out! 😊
