Cinderella’s Gooseberry Bowl by JAJ Pyrex
 
Once upon a time, in the cheerful kitchens of the late 1950s and early 1960s, Pyrex was bringing colour and pattern into everyday cooking. Mixing bowls were no longer simply practical things tucked away in cupboards. They became part of the kitchen itself, made to be seen, used and loved.
 
This beautiful Cinderella bowl was made in Britain by JAJ Pyrex between approximately 1959 and 1962. It features the much-loved Gooseberry pattern, with delicate sprays of leaves, curling stems and plump little gooseberries decorating its rich coral-red exterior. This rare colourway was produced for the British market and is particularly sought after by collectors.
 
A Little Kitchen Magic
 
The wonderful Cinderella shape is instantly recognisable, with its distinctive extended handles sweeping gently from either side.
 
The white Gooseberry decoration sits beautifully against the coral-red exterior, while the glossy white interior creates that unmistakable mid-century Pyrex contrast.
 
Made by JAJ Pyrex in Sunderland, England, this is a wonderful example of the distinctive designs created especially for the British market.
 
Why it’s so special
 
Gooseberry has become one of the most beloved Pyrex patterns, but this British coral-red version is particularly rare. Finding one in such beautiful condition more than sixty years after it was made makes it even more special.
 
It is also a piece that can still be enjoyed. Display it on a kitchen shelf, fill it with fruit, or bring it out for baking, just as it was intended all those years ago.
 
Condition and Character
 
This bowl is in very good vintage condition for its age.
The white Gooseberry decoration has some softness and slight blurring that occurred during manufacture. This is seen on the white-on-red Gooseberry pattern and is original to the piece.
 
There is a small amount of wear to the coral-red finish in places, as pictured. It is minor and does not detract from the beautiful overall presentation of the bowl.
