The Solstice Swirl Bowl: A Hineri Art Glass Sculpture
Hineri Art Glass Bowl
There is something almost molten about this extraordinary glass bowl. Deep ruby red rises into glowing tangerine, while a thick layer of clear glass captures the colour inside and gives it incredible depth.
The rim has been pulled into dramatic, sweeping lobes, creating a shape that feels fluid and sculptural. From every angle, the glass seems to move. The clear casing catches the light, while flashes of red and orange glow from within like little pockets of fire.
Originally created as an ashtray, its dramatic form gave an everyday object the presence of a little glass sculpture. The sweeping lobes around the rim were not simply decorative, but part of its original function, beautifully worked into the freeform design.
It is wonderfully substantial in the hand, yet there is a softness to the way the glass curves and stretches. Nothing about its shape feels rigid or mechanical. It has the beautiful individuality of something formed by hand.
A Little Hineri Magic
Hineri is a Japanese word meaning “twist” or “pinch”, and it is the perfect name for this wonderfully expressive style of glassmaking.
While the cased glass was still molten, glassmakers used hand tools to pinch, pull and sculpt the rim into its dramatic freeform lobes. Each movement helped determine the final silhouette, meaning no two hand-worked pieces could ever be completely identical.
The thick, clear casing is another beautiful part of its construction. Layers of brilliant colour appear suspended within the glass, creating that wonderful sense of depth and allowing the fiery centre to glow through the crystal-clear exterior.
Turn the bowl over, and the craftsmanship continues underneath. A distinctive five-petal star-shaped base surrounds a smooth, polished concave centre, creating one final beautiful detail.
This piece dates to the 1960s–1970s and is attributed to Iwatsu Glass Co. of Osaka, Japan, and its celebrated Hineri range.
Why it’s so special
There is something wonderfully alive about this glass. The colours move from deep red to glowing tangerine, while every curve catches and bends the light differently.
Place it somewhere the sunlight can find it, and the colours become even more extraordinary. It is part bowl, part sculpture, and a beautiful celebration of colour, movement and hand-worked glass.

🧚♀️ A Little Note from the Antique Fairy
As with all vintage darlings, these pieces have lived a life or two and may have tiny surface scratches here or there as part of their story. I do my very best to capture any little whispers of wear in photos and notes. I also try to photograph each treasure in different light so you can see the colour as clearly as possible. Even so, tones may vary a little from screen to screen.
