The Harlequin Rainbow Leaf Set 🌈
🌿 Once upon a time, in the glittering post-war years of the 1950s and 60s, a colourful trend fluttered across dining tables and vanity stands like a kaleidoscope of butterflies. This lovely five-piece set is a perfect snapshot of that magical era!
🌿 Long ago, in the glassworks of Japan (most likely the fiery kilns of Soga Glass or Iwatsu), these little leaves were born. While American glassmakers were busy making everything in one colour, Japanese artisans had a more playful idea: "Why settle for one colour when you can have a rainbow?"
🌿 These leaves were part of a grand migration. Packed into neat little boxes that traveled across the ocean to land in stores across the globe.
🌿 Back then, they were often called Smoker’s Sets—dainty ashtrays for fashionable parties. But as the decades rolled by, they shed their smoky past to become trinket dishes, ready to hold a single pearl earring, a lucky treasure, or a colourful mints.
🌿 Each leaf is a tiny sculpture of nature, with veins pressed into the glass to catch the light. They were designed to nest perfectly inside one another, snuggling up like a family of autumn leaves waiting for the wind.
🍭 The history of Harlequin Glass 🍭
The name comes from the Harlequin (or Arlecchino), a mischievous clown from old Italian plays. He didn't wear a boring tuxedo; he wore a suit made of bright, mismatched, diamond-shaped patches.
🍭 The Mismatched Masterpiece 🍭
In the world of glass, "Harlequin" means a set where every piece is a different, vibrant colour. It was the ultimate mix and match style!
🍭 The Party Trick 🍭
In the mid-century, a clever hostess would use a Harlequin set so guests would never lose their way. "The blue leaf is mine, and the pink one is yours!" it whispered.
The Jewell Tones: This set features the classic Harlequin palette:
Rosaline Pink: For a touch of romance.
Honey Amber: To capture the afternoon sun.
Sky Blue: Like a clear summer morning.
Light Yellow/Green: For a pop of garden freshness.
Smoke Grey: The sophisticated sibling of the bunch.
🍭 A Little Care for Your Treasure 🍭
Because these leaves are elders (likely 60+ years old!), they prefer a gentle life. They dislike the clatter-bash of a dishwasher and prefer a soft bath in warm, soapy water.
The bowls are in super vintage condition.
All items are in vintage and antique preloved condition. Some minor surface scratches may be present. I do my best to note and photograph any wear. Please contact me with any further questions :)
