The Flame-Kissed Flower Bowl
The Tale of the Flame-Kissed Flower
Imagine a dollop of molten cherry jam swirling with the heat of a thousand suns. That is the feeling of this bowl, all rich red glass, fluid movement, and beautiful mid-century drama.
This striking piece is often described as a pinched or lobed bowl, with sculptural curves that mimic the shape of a blooming lily or the movement of liquid caught and frozen in time.
This style reached its peak in the 1950s and 60s, when design became softer, more playful, and beautifully organic. Corners were out, curves were in, and living rooms were filled with bold sculptural pieces designed to catch the eye.
The rich cherry-red glass glows beautifully as the light moves through it, shifting between deep crimson and warmer ruby tones throughout the day.
While many bowls in this style were made by celebrated American glassmakers like Viking or Kanawha, the spirit of the design reaches back to Murano, Italy. The glassmakers there became famous for creating bold flowing forms and mastering layered colour techniques that made glass feel alive with movement and depth.
In its past life, a bowl this shape was often intended to be a wonderfully glamorous ashtray. This piece has successfully pivoted and feels just as beautiful styled as a decorative centrepiece, filled with sparkling crystals, or holding the world’s most sophisticated lollies.
To really see the glass sing, place it where the afternoon sun can catch it. The red deepens and glows, casting beautiful colour and reflections around it.
Why it’s so special
Bold red art glass from this era is becoming increasingly sought after, especially in sculptural forms like this. The fluid lobed shape feels playful and dramatic all at once, while the rich cherry-red glass catches the light beautifully and gives the whole piece a wonderful sense of movement. Pieces like this bring so much personality to a space and feel especially lovely when displayed where the colour can really shine.
Each curated treasure comes with its own illustrated history card, created especially for the piece and inspired by the details that make it unique, allowing the thread of its story to carry forward into the hands of its next keeper.
Condition and Character
This beautiful piece is in excellent vintage condition. No chips or cracks observed. The glass remains bright and glossy throughout, with the sculptural shape beautifully preserved. As with vintage glass, gentle signs from the making process or age may be present and are part of the character of an original piece from this era.
🧚♀️ A Little Note from the Antique Fairy 🧚♀️
As with all vintage darlings, these pieces have lived a life or two and may have tiny surface scratches here or there as part of their story. I do my very best to capture any little whispers of wear in photos and notes. I also try to photograph each treasure in different light so you can see the colour as clearly as possible. Even so, tones may vary a little from screen to screen.
