The Atomic Starburst Clock by Junghans
 
The 1960s were filled with a fascination for space, futuristic forms and beautiful new ideas about modern living. This spectacular Junghans wall clock captures that spirit perfectly, with its dramatic starburst silhouette and unmistakable Mid-Century Modern design.
 
Made in West Germany during the 1960s, the clock is crafted in two contrasting tones of teak with elegant ebonised black detailing. Long, tapered rays extend from the centre in an extraordinary sculptural formation, creating a piece that feels as much like wall art as it does a clock.
 
At the centre is a striking black and ivory face, finished with slender brass markers, sculptural hands, and a fine red seconds hand. Its original domed glass cover opens on special hinge, a beautiful detail that adds another layer of craftsmanship to the design.
 
A Little Piece of Clockmaking History
 
Hidden behind that glamorous face is the clock’s original 1960s electromechanical movement, stamped “ELECTRONIC LIC. ATO.”
 
ATO technology was developed and patented by Léon Hatot, an early pioneer of electric clockmaking, with Junghans holding the rights to use the technology in its 1960's West German clocks.
 
These electromechanical movements belong to a fascinating period just before quartz clocks became widespread during the 1970s. Many clocks from this era have since been converted to modern quartz movements, making it particularly special to find one that still retains its original mechanism and remains in perfect working order.
 
The clock operates with a single C battery, which will be included so it arrives ready to hang and enjoy.
 
Why it’s so special
 
This is Mid-Century Modern design at its most glamorous. The beautiful two-tone teak starburst, deep ebonised black detailing and delicate brass accents give the clock an incredibly sophisticated presence. Its sweeping silhouette captures the playful optimism and fascination with space that defined so much of 1960s design.
 
Its original domed glass face and electromechanical movement remain intact, making this not only a spectacular decorative piece, but a beautiful survivor from an exciting era of European design and clockmaking.
 
Condition and Character
 
This clock is in beautiful vintage condition and perfect working order. There is one tiny dot on the ivory clock face and a small amount of wear where the clock opens, as pictured.
 
These small signs of age do not detract from its beautiful overall presentation.
