The Emerald Flowers of Bohemia Set
The Emerald Flowers of Bohemia Set
Six little glasses from the golden age of European glassmaking, each one still sparkling as beautifully as the day it was made.
Attributed to the historic Bohemia region of Europe, now part of the Czech Republic, these beautiful tumblers were individually mouth-blown in a brilliant Art Deco green.
Their colour has that unmistakable jewel-like quality that became enormously fashionable during the 1930s, when green glass began appearing on some of the most stylish tables and cocktail trolleys of the era.
Look closely and you can see the wonderful little signatures of traditional glassmaking. Fine bubbles are suspended within the glass, and subtle waves appear where the molten glass was turned and shaped by hand.
Each tumbler is decorated with flowers and trailing leaves, individually engraved into the surface using a stone wheel. You can actually feel the delicate cuts beneath your fingertips. It is a beautiful detail that is becoming rare to find.
Turn the glasses over and there is another clue to their making. Each one retains a pontil scar beneath its base, created when the finished vessel was separated from the glassmaker’s pontil rod.
A Little Bohemian Glass Magic
The historic region of Bohemia became one of Europe’s great centres of decorative glassmaking. It was famous for artisans who specialised in blowing, cutting and engraving glass by hand. A special tradition that spanned generations.
One of the loveliest things about this set is that it brings several of those traditional skills together. The tumblers were mouth-blown first, then returned to the hands of another skilled craftsperson. They then guided the cooled glass against a spinning stone wheel to engrave the floral decoration.
Why it’s so special
It is remarkable to find all six glasses still together and in such beautiful condition.
Look closely and there are tiny bubbles, gentle waves and individual pontil marks, little traces of the process that created them.
Then there is that glorious green. Filled with sparkling water, a cocktail or something celebratory, the thick green bases become even more luminous. They were made to be used, admired and raised around a table, and after all these years they are ready to do exactly that again.
Condition and Character
This complete set of six is in exceptional vintage condition and appears to have remained unused.
There are no chips, flea bites, clouding or noticeable surface wear. The glass remains beautifully clear and vibrant, and the hand-engraved decoration presents wonderfully across the entire set.
The fine bubbles, subtle internal waves and pontil marks are beautiful characteristics of the traditional hand-making process. They form part of the individual character of each glass.
🧚♀️ A Little Note from the Antique Fairy
As with all vintage darlings, these pieces have lived a life or two and may have tiny surface scratches here or there as part of their story. I do my very best to capture any little whispers of wear in photos and notes. I also try to photograph each treasure in different light so you can see the colour as clearly as possible. Even so, tones may vary a little from screen to screen.
If you have any questions or just want to chat about this treasure, feel free to reach out 😊
