The Venetian Midnight Decanter
 
There is something wonderfully decadent about cobalt blue and gold together. This beautiful Italian glass decanter seems to belong to another world, one of candlelit tables, cocktail trolleys, and evenings when even pouring a drink deserved a little ceremony.
 
Its rich cobalt blue glass is covered with delicate flourishes of hand-applied 24-karat gold, trailing across the surface in leaves, flowers, and tiny ornamental details. Against that extraordinary blue, the gilding seems almost to float, catching the light as the decanter is turned.
 
The shape is just as beautiful. A softly rounded body rises into an elegant ringed neck, finished with its original matching glass stopper. Made as a decanter, it transforms something practical into a little piece of Venetian-inspired luxury.
 
And it does not stand alone. The decanter is accompanied by its six original hand-blown glasses. Each one made in the same glorious cobalt blue and decorated with delicate gold detailing. Together, they transform the piece into a complete seven-piece drinks set, made for pouring and sharing something special. 
 
Three Fires and a Little Italian Magic
 
The decoration is associated with the Italian Tre Fuochi tradition, meaning “three fires”, a wonderfully elaborate method of decorating glass that has its roots in the luxurious decorative arts of Venice.
 
Rather than completing the decoration in a single stage, the glass passed through successive firings as different elements were added. The cobalt vessel was hand blown first, followed by its intricate gilded decoration, and finally the painted enamel details. Each stage required another careful firing to fuse the decoration to the glass.
It was a painstaking way to make something beautiful, and by the mid-century years, Italian glassmakers were still drawing upon this much earlier tradition to create richly decorated pieces for an international market.
 
There is even a lovely little trace of the workshop left behind. The underside of the stopper bears the hand-painted number “57”, used to keep the individually fitted stopper together with the decanter it had been ground to fit.
 
Dating to around the 1950s–1960s, the decanter retains its original scalloped “Made in Italy” label beneath the base, along with part of its original “Dipinti A Mano” label, meaning “hand painted”.
 
Why it’s so special
 
So much of the beauty here comes from the contrast. The depth of the cobalt glass gives the gold an extraordinary richness, while the hand-painted decoration means the surface reveals something different every time it catches the light.
 
Finding the original stopper together with surviving period labels makes it even rarer. They are small pieces of its history that have remained with the decanter and give us a glimpse of how this glamorous Italian glass originally left the workshop.
 
Condition and Character
 
This decanter is in beautiful vintage condition, with no cracks or chips.
The cobalt glass remains wonderfully rich and clear. There is some wear to the hand-applied gilding. It is consistent with its age and use, while much of the intricate gold decoration remains beautifully preserved there is still some worn off. Please see photos for its condition and character.
